T
here is a lively debate over whether Colorado or Oregon is the heart of
American craft beer, but Boulder has a legitimate claim. In 1982, it
hosted the first Great American Beer Festival, which included 20 brew-
eries serving only 35 beers. Today, the annual event features more than 2,000.
Avery Brewing Company is one of the city's premiere breweries and takes
its brewing very seriously. Founded in 1993, it offers an incredible selection of-
fering a gamut of flavors, styles, and alcohol content, ranging from the always-
popular IPAs, to Belgian-inspired concoctions, most of which can be tried at its
spacious tap room in Boulder.
About 16 miles away from the tap room is Colorado National Golf Club, a
Jay Morrish-designed course that routinely receives accolades for its layout,
practice facilities, and clubhouse. It's also a major challenge from the tips,
stretching nearly 7,700 yards, but other sets of tees, along with the thin air of
the Rocky Mountains, makes it much more accommodating to mere mortals.
