F
rom the coast of Oregon and the mountains
of Colorado, we now turn to the desert. Tuc-
son is the second largest city in Arizona and a
legendary town of the once-wild American South-
west. Craft beer came a little later to Arizona than
some regions, but it's making up for lost time, as
breweries abound, particularly in the big cities of
Phoenix and Tucson.
One of the finest breweries in Arizona is the
Dragoon Brewing Company. Its tap room is open
Wednesdays through Sundays and closes at 10 p.m.
(5 p.m. on Sundays), and offers about a dozen
homemade brews, including Dragoon IPA, ranked
recently as the second best beer in Arizona, accord-
ing to Beer Advocate.
Two stand-out courses are located within a 20-
minute drive. The Golf Club at Vistoso (top), to
the north, is a pristine desert track designed by Tom
Weiskopf and set between the Tortolita and Santa
Catalina Mountains. To the east, Arizona National
Club, home to the men's and women's golf teams of
Arizona University, is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design
featuring arroyos and jagged rock outcroppings.
