G olfers who share a deep appreciation for the traditions of the game took a walk into the game's past at the inaugu- ral Gamble Sands Hickory Champi- onship held Oct. 3-4. The tournament was played with hickory- shafted golf clubs, the kind of wooden sticks that legends such as Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen won major championships with. "Gamble Sands is a links course built on 300 feet of natural sands and we thought host- ing a retro event would be fitting given the style of the course and the origins of the game," said David Christenson, PGA General Man- ager of the Brew- ster, Wash., track. The event was in- spired by Jim Von Lossow, a western Washington golf professional, club- maker, and fitter. Chris- tenson reached out to Von Lossow, a member of the Northwest Hick- ory Players, and asked if his group would be interested in hosting an event at Gamble Sands. The answer was yes and the response was overwhelming. "The event essen- tially sold out," Chris- tenson said. "We will plan for a larger outing in the fall of 2016." Christenson stressed it was an event as much as a tournament. "Many of the players that registered compete at a number of these types of events that are hosted all around the country," he said. "We paired the event with a scotch tasting and a traditional Scottish dinner on the first evening. And it was a lot of fun to see the players play the course while wearing traditional Scottish at- tire over the two days." The recreation center will contain a fit- ness/cardio room, a dance/yoga studio, and a fully operating spa, which will in- clude massage rooms, a grotto hot tub area with a cold plunge, and a Zen gar- den outside. The event pavilion will offer a 3,600-square-foot ballroom that can be di- vided into three 1,200- square-foot meeting spaces. A large executive board- room and smaller meeting room will also be available. "The boardroom is going to be im- pressive, and the meeting room will be very functional," said Tetherow Market- ing Manager Carrie Ramoz. "We'll have full catering services for weddings, cor- porate retreats, and other events." The projects at Tetherow are expected to be completed in summer 2016. ›› CLICK HERE to visit Tetherow online.
