F
or decades, golfers in southeast Mis-
souri played at small-town golf clubs
formed in the 1920s with old-school
courses that hadn't been modernized or
improved over the years.
As time marched on, the conversation around
golf circles and across bar tables centered on the
desire for a more modern course that offered a
new, championship-caliber layout. Golfers in
the area were yearning for something more,
something new, and something better.
When The Dalhousie Golf Club opened in
2002 in Cape Girardeau, they got it.
"Everybody kept saying, 'When are they
going to do this, when are they going that,' "
Dalhousie owner Cord Dombrowski said. "I
thought it'd be a good time to do something."
What he did turned out to be quite special.
"It's just a fabulous layout," says Orrin Vin-
cent, Chairman of OB Sports, which manages
the property. "It's a big, strong, bold golf course
with gently rolling countryside terrain and 50-
to 70-foot elevation changes. There are no blind
shots and everything is right in front of you.
Nothing else in the region can compare."
Built by Nicklaus Design under the supervi-
sion of the Golden Bear's son, Gary, Dalhousie
measures a challenging 7,389 yards from the tips,
with tree-lined fairways and sparkling lakes.
"There are great expanses of fairway and the
fescue rough and native grasses can grow knee-
high or more," said Dombrowski, who took an
active role in building the golf course. "Even
though the fairways are 60 to 70 yards wide,
they're easy to miss because everything around
them looks so intimidating."
