San Vicente's junior program
helps kids get in the game
F
ast forward three months:
it's summer in Ramona.
Do you know where your
junior golfer is?
The no-brainer
answer, according to
Assistant Pro
Johnny LaFata:
swinging a club in
one of San Vicente's
three-day junior golf
camps, a program
that has helped launch at least
one collegiate golf career. Ra-
mona High School senior Ryan
Graf recently signed a letter of
intent to attend and play golf
for the University of Fraser Val-
ley in Abbotsford, British Co-
lumbia, Canada, as part of a
five-year scholarship.
Graf got his first professional
golf instruction at San Vicente
as a youngster some 13 years
ago, according to his father,
Dan. "The program was very
well run," he said, adding that
Ryan remained active in it until
about five years ago.
LaFata, along with pro shop
attendant Aaron Guevarra and
head golf instructor Fred Ar-
caina, are now gearing up for
another addition of the annual
summer series designed for 5-
to 16-year-olds of all skill levels.
They'll receive lessons and
guided practice in all aspects of
the game, from putting, pitch-
ing and chipping to the full
swing and course etiquette.
Three morning sessions will
be scheduled in June, July and
August. Camps — one each for
beginner, intermediate and
advanced players — will run
Tuesday through Thursday.
Each session will run approxi-
mately one hour.
Cost is $40 per session and
will be limited to 12 students.
Clubs are provided for those
who need a set.
Juniors will have the opportu-
nity to put their new skills to
the test in a summer's end tour-
nament held in late August for
all camps. During the barbecue
banquet following the event,
trophies will be awarded to the
lowest-scoring players and
prizes such as golf clubs, shirts
and balls will be handed out.
