A s part of an intimate golf resort blended into the rolling Ra- mona hills, San Vicente's golf course is well known for its beauty, serenity and immacu- late conditions. But some of its most frequent guests never even pick up a club. So it goes for the three dozen wild turkeys, legions of water fowl and other birds, deer and even the occa- sional bobcat that choose to hang out on the course for many of the same rea- sons that golfers have migrated there for years. "It's just the general habi- tat of the course," says Super- intendent Pat Shannon. "We have hundreds of old coastal live oak trees and we're in a flood plain, so it's a corridor for birds and other wildlife." Whether the wild turkeys that congregate on the back nine, the red-tailed hawks and owls that nest in hol- lowed-out oak trees, or the bobcats that rear their young along the 17th fairway really care about course conditions is doubtful. But they, like so many golfers over the years, do have a golf course they can call home. STAYING IN SHAPE AERATION KEEPS THE COURSE LUSH O ther than rustic its beauty, one reason the Ted Robinson, Sr.-designed San Vicente Re- sort golf course has been attracting guests since opening more than 40 years ago is its superior conditions. Part of that is due to the overseeding of the fairways the course initiates every year in late September. "This is a resort course, so golfers like to see green year-round," says Superintendent Pat Shannon. But another factor is its annual aeration of the greens. This year, that process will close the course on March 31 and April 1. The result is less impacted greens with increased irrigation flow. That will translate into healthy, vital surfaces and, just as important, healthy soil beneath them. What does that mean for golfers? "True rolling conditions and consis- tent speeds all around," Shannon says. ANIMAL ATTRACTION San Vicente is a natural habitat for an array of wildlife Wild turkeys are just some of the wildlife that call San Vicente home.
