l IN THE NEWS OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SUMMER 2018 x obsports.com cant changes made by renowned golf course architect Forrest Richardson and Wadsworth Golf Construction were a 40 percent reduction in turf, which along with improved irrigation methods will re- sult in a 35 percent reduction in potable water usage. The new footprint also in- cludes 55 acres of protected wetlands and 10.5 acres dedicated to the Baylands Ath- letic Center for future recreational use. The par-71 (36-35) course plays 6,680 yards from the tips – three additional sets of tees range from 6,110 yards to 4,821 yards – with Pure Select bent grass greens and Platinum TE Paspalum turf in the fair- ways and rough. Richardson took a course that was flat as a pancake and inserted mounding and undulation everywhere to add challenge and intrigue, as well as im- prove the visual aesthetics of the land. Among the characteristics that make Baylands Golf Links unique are the shared greens on holes 3 and 15 (a complex that's nearly 20,000 square feet) and the 14th hole, a par 4 that has two separate greens – so you could play the hole to the left green on one day and then have a completely different experience playing to the right green on the next day. "Those are just really cool features that you're not going to find on a lot of other golf courses," Molloy said. "It's such a great and fun layout, and I think people are really going to love playing the course." Weekday tee times at Baylands are available for as low as $68 riding with a Links Card membership (or $30 for super twilight), and there are also Palo Alto resi- dent rates and Bay Area resident rates in addition to the general public rates. Leading up to Memorial Day, the course held a handful of private golf outings for city dignitaries and VIPs, golf industry representatives and media, and then opened to the public with a grand-opening celebration on May 26 that featured music, food trucks, kids activities and golf demos. The weeklong celebration represented the culmination of a lengthy process to re- make a course that had long fallen short of living up to its immense potential. But for local golfers, the wait for this thoughtfully planned, well-executed total makeover was well worth it.
