l IN THE NEWS OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SUMMER 2018 x obsports.com and numerous other Silicon Valley tech giants – but everything else about the new public links-style course managed by OB Sports and owned by the city has changed. "People have been chomping at the bit to get out here and experience the golf course," said Matt Molloy, Senior Vice President of Operations for OB Sports. "The driving range and the putting and chipping greens have been open pretty much throughout the construc- tion process, so golfers have been practicing here the entire time, and there's plenty of pent-up demand to get out and play the course. "It has been fun to be part of a new operation and a rebranding of the facility. This is a great project for the city and its residents." Originally designed by William F. Bell in 1956, the course had been prone to flooding, and a proposed project to relocate a levee on the San Francisquito Creek started the ball rolling toward what eventually was de- cided on as a complete reconstruction of the property. Now he's taking another big step forward in his career, transitioning into the position of Senior Vice President of Operations for OB Sports in the company's Scottsdale, Arizona, office. We caught up with Matt as he was assist- ing with the opening of the new Baylands Golf Links to talk about his new role and some of his favorite golf memories. > What will be your main responsibili- ties in your new role? I'll manage a num- ber of courses alongside each of the general managers and staffs at each course. I'll be serving as support for opera- tions, marketing, and all the other areas of support we bring to help OB Sports-man- aged clubs be successful. > What attracted you to the opportu- nity? A big thing for me is the variety of courses I'll get to be a part of. I loved my time at Sandia, but it will be fun to be in- volved with so many different types of courses all over the country – private clubs, municipal facilities, tribal-owned courses and some single-owner properties. Being involved in things at a different level is something that excites me, and hopefully I can have a positive impact. > What do you like to do in your spare time? We take a lot of family camping trips and play a lot of golf as a family, plus lots of other outdoor activities. My kids are 13 and 10, and time goes by fast, so I like to do everything I can with them. > What is your favorite course you have played and your most memorable round? We went to Scotland a couple of years ago, and I think Kingsbarns would be my favorite. I got to play Pinehurst No. 2 with my dad and two brothers, which was a fantastic experience. Also, I coach my kids in the PGA Junior League, so watching them compete is a lot of fun. I think I get more nervous than they do. "A big thing for me is the variety of courses I'll get to be a part of." MATT MOLLOY, Senior VP of Operations, OB Sports GET TO KNOW… Distinctive green complexes are a trademark at Baylands.
