But there are steps that can be taken to maintain the quality and playability of the fairways and greens when the heat is on. "During the summer months we do follow certain practices to im- prove the health of our bermuda grass," said Director of Agronomy Andrew Rebman. "This way we can ensure the best possible playing con- ditions for our guests" Some of the work that will be per- formed in July and August includes: ‰ Aerification, which improves water infiltration and oxygen move- ment into the soil, reduces com- paction, removes thatch and encour- ages new roots to form. ‰ Verticutting, which removes old growth, promotes new stem growth and removes grain. ‰ Topdressing, which helps smooth the playing surfaces, assists with the decomposition of thatch and reduces disease pressure. Improving soil fertility and water management also are important factors. "After obtaining our soil fertility test results, we customize our fertil- ity program to balance nutrient lev- els in the soil and maximize the health of the bermuda grass," Reb- man said. "We also conduct irriga- tion audits during this time to improve our application of water." In order to perform this work, the golf course will be closed on select dates in July and August. "Closing the course is necessary for us to complete these labor-inten- sive tasks," Rebman said. grOund cOnTrOl Maintaining course conditions during summer requires a good game plan Classic Club takes a number of steps to keep the course in top shape during the summer.
