WHAT'S NEW
W
hile he is still one of the
most formidable and
fan-favorite golfers on
the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson is
also actively involved in the game
in ways other than playing – partic-
ularly in the state where he honed
his game in college.
The 46-year-old five-time major
champion has signed an agreement
with his alma mater, Arizona State
University, to design a short-game
practice facility in Phoenix that he
believes will be the finest ever built.
"This short-game facility is going
to be the single greatest short-game
facility in the country," said Mickel-
son, who graduated from ASU in
1995 and was a three-time NCAA
individual champion. "It's not
going to be the biggest, it's not
going to be the most aesthetically
beautiful. It's going be the most
functional. It's where these young
college players will be able to de-
velop their game and harness their
short game, and develop a world-
class short game."
The facility will be part of OB
Sports-managed Papago Golf
Course, which ASU recently
agreed to use as its home course
for the men's and women's golf
teams. It will include a full-length
driving range and five-acre short-
game area, as well as 6,750 square
feet of air conditioned building
space that will serve as home to
both teams, along with 2,400 square
feet of exterior covered space.
Construction on the short-game
facility, which is being built by Phil
Mickelson Design, is scheduled to
begin this year. It will augment a
portfolio that includes a short-game
facility in La Jolla, two courses in
China and the Mickelson National
Golf Club, currently being built in
Calgary, Canada.
