"The best thing about the golf course, to me, is that you learn something new each time you play. You discover another strategic way to play a hole, or a better target to aim at on a green for a makeable putt." While each hole has its own identity, Shelton's favorite is the 500-yard, risk- reward par-5 finishing hole. "It's one of the best holes you'll ever play," he said. "How you play each shot gives you a new option for the following shot. The drive features a lake to the left and bunkers to the right. The second shot then gives you a chance to go for the green over water, or navigate the hazard on your approach. And the green is one of the most strategic on the course." While the track is definitely a highlight, SeaCliff prides itself on being a lifestyle club and the relaxed coastal community is mirrored by the mentality of the membership. "What I love most when I ride around the course is that I could see myself being a part of each group playing," he says. "Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. It really is a membership full of friends who love their club and their golf course." As a Master PGA Professional, Shelton says he's visited some of the top clubs in the U.S. and he would "put SeaCliff at the top of any list. Beyond a great golf course, members want a club where they can feel part of a community, deepen relationships, and enjoy an incredible culture with their friends. They want a place where they can spend time with people of the same interests. Members enjoy the camaraderie and relationships above anything else." The club stages a host of events and tournaments throughout the year that are as much about connecting members with one another as the golf, such as the GM Cup, Scramble Skins, and the VZ Cup. In addition to golf, SeaCliff offers a fitness center, pool, sauna, steam rooms, 16 tennis courts, a driving range, men's and ladies locker rooms, and formal and casual dining, where you'll find one of Shelton's favorite dishes. "The best thing on the menu is The Cliff Dog, which celebrates the history of the city," he said. "Though oil created the first boom for the city in the early 1920s, in 1925 Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku brought the sport of surfing to Huntington Beach. In honor of that, The Cliff Dog was created, which is blackened Mahi Mahi served on a Hawaiian hot dog bun." COUNTRY CLUBS The risk-reward 18th hole.
