I f it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a team of dedi- cated and committed em- ployees to run a premier golf facility. And the best of the bunch was recently honored at Classic Club. Albert Hernandez Alvarez, a busboy who works in Bellatrix Restaurant, was named Em- ployee of the Year at a special ceremony in late December. (The other two finalists included Oscar Vegas of the Maintenance Department and the Golf Department's Tom Ketchum.) Alvarez is the epitome of a young man who is making the most of his opportunities. A year ago, he was a farm worker, pick- ing strawberries under the hot summer sun to help his family with bills and other expenses. But on Feb. 11, 2016, the 21-year- old resident of the Coachella Val- ley was hired at Classic Club, thanks in no small part to his uncle who also works there. His job duties may not seem that detailed, but it's the little things that go into making any successful restaurant function daily, everything from opening the doors in the morning and setting up the patio to brewing ice tea and coffee. And while he enjoys the work, there's some- thing he appreciates even more. "My co-workers are my fa- vorite thing," he said. "They helped me out the first day when they trained me how to do things the right way. We are a team together." The golf course views aren't bad either. When he doesn't have his head down busily working, Alvarez says he ad- mires the view from the patio that overlooks the fairways and waterfall on the 18th green. When not working, Alvarez can usually be found on a tennis court, putting to use the skills he learned by taking a college class. But his end goal has nothing to do with golf or tennis. "I'm planning on going back to college and to work in the medical field," he said. "I want to be a nurse where I can take care of elderly people. One day, I'll be accomplishing that goal." Whatever the future holds, he's already demonstrated the kind of work ethic that will translate into any endeavor. "I think my co-workers appre- ciate that I am a hard, efficient worker," he said. "I hustle every day to show them that I can do better. I don't waste my time."
