T he fall overseed and aerifica- tion process is under way at Classic Club, with the course set to re-open for play on Nov. 11. "The course must be closed during this period in order to establish the rye grass and allow it to mature prior to play," said Director of Agronomy Andrew Rebman. "Essentially, we are growing in a whole new golf course in only five weeks." Rebman said that in addition to overseeding, the maintenance team will use this time to work on landscaping, fertilization, trimming, and cleaning of the pump stations. Upon its re-opening, there are steps golfers can take to help ensure the course remains in optimal shape. Here are four things you can do: 1) cart traffic. The dispersing of cart traffic may be the most important thing golfers can do to help maintain playing conditions. The less traffic the young seedlings receive during the first eight weeks following over- seed dramatically improves the con- ditions for the remainder of the season once the rye grass matures. 2) fill your divots with sand & seed. Filing your divots with sand and seed promotes quicker recovery and po- tentially gives golfers behind you a better lie if they land in a divot. 3) repair your ball mark and some- one else's on every green. Repairing your ball mark on every green helps to maintain smooth putting surfaces for everyone. When fixing a ball mark do not pull up the mark and tamp it down. Instead, insert your repair tool vertically into the green just outside the mark pulling and twisting inward (you may need to do this from two or three sides) prior to tamping down with your putter. "This will ensure we do not scalp the mark the following morning when we mow," Rebman said. 4) rake the sand traps by pushing rather than pulling. By pushing the bunker rake rather than pulling while raking the bunker you will not leave indented marks in the sand, which someone's ball may come to rest in leaving a less-than-desired lie. In- stead, you will leave a smooth fluffed surface for the player behind you. < The golf course is closed through Nov. 11 for overseed and aerification.
