C
ordeValle is well ac-
quainted with highly
pedigreed golf
championships, but in July
the course will host its
most prestigious: The
2016 United States
Women's Open.
The event will show-
case the best professional
and amateur women players
in the world July 7-10, in-
cluding 10 former U.S. Open
champions.
The first women's U.S.
Open was held at the
Spokane Country Club in
1946. Patty Berg won the in-
augural tournament, and
since then some of the great-
est names in the sport have
hoisted the trophy, from
Babe Zaharias and Mickey
Wright to Annika Sorenstam
and Karrie Webb.
Webb is one of the former
champions who will com-
pete in this year's event,
along with Michelle Wie,
who won in 2014, and last
year's champion, In Gee
Chun. Other names to
watch for include top-
ranked Lydia Ko and 18-
year-old Canadian Brooke
Henderson, who recently
beat Ko in a playoff to win
the KPMG Women's PGA
Championship.
This will be the first time
the event, which is staged
by the United States Golf
Association, will take place
in the Bay Area.
Since opening in 1999,
CordeValle has twice hosted
the PGA Cup (2011 and
2015), which pits a team of
American golfers against
Irish and British players; the
USGA Senior Women's
Open (2013), the PGA Tour's
Frys.com Open (2010-2013)
and the Gifford Collegiate
Championship (2005-2014),
a prestigious fall tournament
that attracts some of the best
college golf programs in the
country.
But this is the first time for
the premier women's golf
tournament in the United
States. As anyone who
watched the men's U.S.
Open at Oakmont Country
Club certainly knows, the
USGA loves challenging
players in its Open champi-
onships with high rough
and wickedly fast greens.
At CordeValle, that
difficulty will be com-
pounded by its 68 stern
bunkers and high slope rat-
ing. For the championship,
players will compete on a
6,762-yard course with a
slope rating of 137.
