E
ven a private property as pristine, relaxing and
well-appointed as Michigan's True North Golf
Club can still fly under the proverbial radar. That
is why Matt Payne, the club's PGA General Man-
ager, is not reticent spreading the word about what he feels
are the private club's main selling – and staying – points:
its championship golf course, tight-knit membership, and
countless amenities both on and off the property.
"It's a family-like atmosphere," Payne said. "The club is a
true escape and there is a general feeling of relaxation on
the property. Those things are hard to define and create but
are marvelous when they come together."
At the center of it all is a world-class layout from architect
Jim Engh. Opened in 2004, it was ranked No. 7 among golf
courses in Michigan by Golf Digest in its Best in State Rank-
