start with either the uphill or down-
hill putt.
The drill is to get each putt to ei-
ther go in or just past the center of
the cup by no more than a standard
putter length.
Once you get three in row within
that semi-circle, you then hit the
other putts from the op-
posite direction. Re-
member, you only get
to change directions
when you get three in a
row. It's a great drill
that can teach you to
control speed under a
little bit of pressure.

We all experience the jitters from
time to time on short putts. One thing
that I do to overcome nerves on short
putts is to pick a tiny spot on my line
about an inch in front of the ball
when I putt.
I don't focus on the ball because I
have found that if I look where I
want the ball to start, I am much
more accurate with my line and less
nervous about making or missing.
When I look at the ball I have a de-
gree of uncertainty of starting it on
line and I start worrying about mak-
ing and missing.
It's kind of like shooting a basket-
ball or pitching in baseball – you look
where you want it to go.

One last piece of advice: It's im-
portant that when you purchase a
putter, find one you can aim well.
It doesn't matter how good your
stroke is, you won't hit it on the cor-
rect path if the putter isn't aimed on
that line.
Go to a club fitter or instructor
who has the tools to check your abil-
ity to aim. At ASU Karsten Golf
Course where I teach, for instance,
we have a laser alignment tool that I
use – it's the first thing I check before
I look at someone's stroke.
Make sure you buy the putter you
aim the best regardless of how it
looks or is balanced. Do not fall in
love with the looks or brand. You
have to be able to aim it. The style,
shape and hosel configuration can all
affect your ability to aim.
