farm-like buildings, such as barns and
farmhouse-type structures."
The clubhouse, which houses the grill
and golf shop, is called the Big Red Barn
and features high ceilings, and the event
room is the Red Shed, which can accom-
modate up to 200 guests with additional
room on the lawn for another 100 more.
As on most of the property, pristine
views of towering Mt. Hood can be seen
from there.
But Langdon Farms isn't just a rustic,
quaint face. While it is mostly flat and
doesn't present the kind of tree-lined
fairways that grace many of
the courses in the North-
west, it can be a decep-
tively challenging course
with plenty of mounding
and creative bunkering.
It's hosted local U.S. Open
qualifiers and the lowest score Stead re-
members was a 68. And while the course
doesn't put such onerous pin placements
out for everyday play, it shows that the it
packs a considerable punch.
"We think we're among the best in the
area for charity events, so we get a lot of
folks who aren't regulars playing here
supporting their local charity, and they
get pushed up to the white tees, which
are the forward men's tees, and a lot of
times they'll walk away thinking that it
was a pretty easy course," Stead said.
"But then they come back and play their
own ball from the back tees and wind up
getting their butt kicked, because they
don't realize how challenging it is."
The length from the back tees is 6,931
yards, and while you don't have to ma-
neuver your ball around hulking Dou-
glas firs and water only comes into play
on three holes, to score well you really
need to attack the course with your mind
as much as your clubs.
"There is a lot of room to miss it, but
you still have to miss on the proper parts
of the fairway to give you the best ap-
proach to the green," he said. "Our green
complexes are pretty neat – we have col-
lection areas and those run-offs are
shaped to a fairway height, which makes
it more of a challenge to hit off."
An example is the sixth hole. It's only
120 yards from the tips but "if you miss
the green you're lucky to make par be-
cause of the way the green sets up,"
Stead said. "There's a collection area that
runs 15 yards off the green and then
you're coming up a steep slope and you
have to try to flop or bump it – you have
to be very delicate with the shot to get it
close. So missing the green on that hole
can easily lead to a bogey or worse. And
that's reflective of a lot of the green com-
plexes. You have to be very precise with
your approach shots."
