In a cordial game, your playing partners might encourage you to bump your ball into a better lie. Some would say there's nothing wrong with that – and that's exactly the spirit behind Golf Channel's 'Golf is Fun' Relaxed Rules. "I think it's great," said Jay Larscheid, General Man- ager of Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. "We all grew up enjoying the game with our buddies and these are the rules we grew up playing." Golf Channel came up with a list of seven "relaxed" rules designed to encourage a more enjoyable and faster round of golf. Larscheid sees the merit in this. "Golf is hard enough without the severe penalties," he said. "We want to put our players in position to have an enjoyable round. Not make it more stressful." The end result isn't to play with- out rules, but to create an environ- ment where novice players can enjoy the game more. "The rules are there to help you," Larscheid says. "But sometimes the game turns into basing your success on a number. We tend to forget the fun of just playing golf." RELAX AND ENJOY n GOLF CHANNEL AIMS FOR FUN WITH ITS RELAXED RULES INITIATIVE 1) Maximum score is double par. 2) Penalties are all one stroke. 3) Limit ball search to two minutes. 4) Improve unfortunate lies. 5) Conceded putts allowed. 6) No equipment restrictions. 7) Use common sense.
