Gleneagles' PGA Cente- nary Course is a roomy, brawny Jack Nicklaus de- sign. These days Europe's best can launch it with most U.S. players, start- ing with Rory McIlroy, the longest, straightest driver in the game today under pressure. Sure, the course is an Ameri- can-style design, but so was Celtic Manor, an even more muscular layout in Wales, where Europe won in 2010. And is there a course more "American" than Medinah No. 3, the mas- sive parklander in suburban Chicago, where the U.S. team al- most won in 2012 – but didn't? Some might give a huge home course advantage to Europe be- cause Gleneagles is the venue for an annual PGA European Tour event, but dismiss that quickly. Only a couple of Eu- rope's players ever bother to enter, Stephen Gallacher being a notable exception. There aren't many memorable holes at Gleneagles' PGA Cente- nary Course, but they were also in short supply at The Belfry in England, a four-time host, yet that course has yielded plenty of drama over the years. WHO GOT THE BETTER OF THE CAPTAINS' PICKS? Europe had the clear advan- tage on paper. Ian Poulter was a no-brainer, the most dynamic Euro-stud since Seve. Not many Americans are fa- miliar with Stephen Gallacher, but he was an easy pick. The nephew of three-time European Captain Bernard Gallacher, Stephen has sizzled as of late, barely missing out on an auto- matic bid.
