Why Chardonnay is the
perfect place to practice
W
e all know if we're going
to get better at this game
then we need to spend
some time practicing on the range.
But the problem is that hitting balls
on worn-out mats can be frustrating
and sometimes create bad habits that
are difficult to correct.
Golfers don't have that problem at
the Chardonnay Golf Club practice
facility, which features
an all grass, 2-acre oasis
of lushly mown turf.
Not only does it pro-
vide multiple target
greens and a practice
fairway bunker, it also
is large enough to work
through every club in
your bag with a 300-
yard-by-350-plus yard landing area.
"It can handle a wide range of
players," said Head Golf Professional
Bob Becker. "And it only makes sense
that if you're hitting off the same sur-
face as what you're playing on it's a
lot easier to transfer your practice
time to your round of golf."
And that practice time should in-
clude a solid plan before you even
head out to the range.
"Practice like you would play a
round of golf," Becker explains.
"Don't just go out there and bang
balls. Pick a target and play to it. I
would even incorporate your pre-
shot routine to your practice session."
Becker also suggests concentrating
on one element of your game during
each practice session: "One day prac-
tice your alignment and then the next
day work on your grip."
Another suggestion is to picture a
mini fairway when you're hitting
your driver.
"I start by hitting something half
distance until I can feel that I'm in
complete control with my driver,"
Becker said. "Then I just concentrate
on hitting that mini fairway."

ity includes a large and undulat-
ing putting green where you can
work on your short game. Here's a tip
from Head Golf Professional Bob
Becker to avoid the dreaded 3-putt:
"We've all been taught to putt to a
2-foot target around the hole," says
Becker. "I always tell people to not just
hit your ball in that 2-foot area, but vi-
sualize the hole as being 2-feet wide.
That way, you have a sense of pur-
pose and it really helps build your
confidence, because you're not get-
ting it 2-feet close – in essence, you're
making those putts because the hole
is 2-feet wide."
