O
ne may think that with the
hundreds of world-class
golf courses across the
globe that all the great
tracks have already been built and no
contemporary architect has a chance
to stand in the rarefied air of the leg-
endary designers of the past.
David McLay Kidd is living proof
that isn't the case.
Though the Scottish-born Kidd has
designed courses from Ireland and
South Africa to St. Andrews and
Nicaragua, he seems to have an affinity
for the western United States. His first
masterpiece, Bandon Dunes, opened in
1999 in Oregon; TPC of San Francisco
Bay at Stonebrae opened in 2007 in
Haywood, California; Tetherow opened
in 2008 in Bend, Oregon; Huntsman
Springs opened in '10 in Idaho; and his
latest course, Gamble Sands, which he
calls a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,"
opens in August in Central Washington.
Like all of his courses, Gamble Sands
showcases Kidd's classically infused
minimalist approach in a rugged and
dramatic layout.
Following is a Q&A with Kidd, where
he weighs in on his past, present and
his singular perspective as one of the
world's most renowned contemporary
golf course designers.
