The Next Big Thing began
2014 with a T2 at the champions-
only Hyundai event, then dusted
Tiger at Torrey Pines (71-72 on
Thursday, 63-71 on Friday) the
first time they were ever paired
together in a tournament.
His amazing runner-up at the
Masters was backed with
another center-stage per-
formance at the Players,
where he tied for fourth.
Is it a concern that he
hasn't won more? Not
yet. It took Tom Watson
several years to start closing with
regularity, after many close calls.
Spieth has a special kind of ma-
turity and self-belief for someone
who isn't yet of age to play black-
jack in Vegas. He's personable,
with a great sense of humor, yet
as the Masters showed, he vents
plenty of emotion.
Let the learning process con-
tinue and he's poised to become
one of the greats.
ONE ADAM
As compelling as the Kaymer-
Watson ranking debate is as of
mid-June, it's Adam Scott who
has ascended to No. 1.
Unquestionably, it's well-
earned, and there's little to sug-
gest that by year's end he won't
retain that ranking. Scott fol-
lowed his 2013 Masters tri-
umph with a fabulous
fall, winning The Bar-
clays, the Australian PGA
and the Talisker Masters.
Since then, he's maintained
a light schedule to keep him fresh.
He played just nine events lead-
ing into the U.S. Open, and his re-
sults have been outstanding.
Including his T9 at Pinehurst, he
has seven Top 10s, highlighted by
a playoff victory at Colonial.
Recently married, Scott is such
a nice, calm guy, we occasionally
confuse his lack of fire for a lack
of desire. Make no mistake, he
burns.
