But it wasn't without some tension. In the first round, he encoun- tered a ruling that re- sulted in a series of drops under Rule 24-2, as well as a local rule for temporary immov- able obstructions. THE SCENARIO Following his tee shot, Couples needed relief from the obstruction that resulted in his first free drop. Upon gaining relief, an immov- able obstruction – in this case, a cart path – interfered with his next shot and he had to take another drop. Following the second drop, Cou- ples found himself in a situation where the original obstruction again interfered with his shot and he was forced to drop a third time. THE RULE Upon gaining relief from the origi- nal situation, if interference from an- other situation occurs, you must take relief separately. In short, we don't get to drop away from every obstruction in one fell swoop – we have to take them on one at a time. Although he didn't incur a penalty, the situation left Couples flustered at having to take three drops to get him relief from interfer- ence when he clearly felt one drop would have been sufficient.
