Chardonnay's Golf Course Superintendent is dedicated to keeping the layout in top shape year-round
W
hen it comes to
Chardonnay's
course condi-
tions, no one cares more
than Surinder Singh.
And that's a good thing.
"As Golf Course Super-
intendent, it's my job to
maintain the course to the
best of my ability, utilizing
all of my available man-
power," says Singh, who
first got started in the
business in 1985 after ar-
riving in Northern Cali-
fornia from his native
India. "I fell in love with
this line of work 28 years
ago and have never
looked back."
When did you begin
working at Chardonnay?
February 16, 2012.
What do you enjoy
most about Chardonnay?
The great people I get to
work with. And, there is
a lot of natural beauty
around this property.
Your greatest strength
on the job? Getting the
most out of everybody
who works for me.
What is the job's most
challenging aspect? Deal-
ing with the weather —
and the water. This year
especially. Everyone is af-
fected by the drought.
What's one thing about
your job that most people
don't know? How tough it
is. There are a lot of com-
ponents to keeping the
course in shape. People
think growing grass is
easy, but it's not always
that easy.
When it comes to your
job, what one word best
describes you? Passionate.
What are you most
proud of? Doing my job
to the best of my ability.
What do you like to do
outside of work? I could
play basketball all day
long, eight days a week.
What phrase do you
most overuse? Good as
always. If someone asks
me how I'm doing, I say,
"Good as always."
What do you consider
your greatest achieve-
ment? I'm married to the
woman I love and I have
two boys who turned out
to be really great kids and
who are both in college.
What is your most
treasured possession? My
health. As long as I'm
healthy, I'm fine.
What is your motto?
Get up early in the
morning and go, go, go.
