Mission Trails Golf Course offers
a challenging test of target golf
T
iger Woods cut some of his ferocious
teeth as a junior at Mission Trails
Golf Course. In 1990, the young
Woods won one of his six Junior World
Golf Championships at the William Bell-
designed course, and while he's obviously
moved on since, the course still stokes a
fierce allegiance among locals.
"We have a 200-plus men's club that
is really active," General Manager
Matt Pennington said.
Located in the San Carlos
neighborhood some 10 miles from
downtown San Diego, the par-71
layout is just 6,000 yards from the tips
and includes five par 3s but "it plays longer
because so much of it is target golf," Pen-
nington said. "We're also known for having
some of the best greens around. They're
small so they aren't easy to hit, but they al-
ways roll very consistent."
The front nine is shorter and easily lays
out across a valley, while an irrigation cul-
vert winds through the back nine, which is
adjacent to Lake Murray. That makes for
two distinctive nines that are ideal "for be-
ginner and intermediate golfers, as well as
those who like the challenge of target golf,"
Pennington said.
The facility is also perfectly suitable for
intimate receptions and other gatherings.
The clubhouse seats about 72, offering full
views of the front nine as well as Cowles
Mountain.
Another amenity is a night-lit driving
range with 30 stations, half outfitted with
mats and the others with grass.
"It really is just a fun course that keeps
bringing people back," Pennington said.
