role (1988-1994 and 1998-2015) as host
course for the PGA Tour stop in the
Coachella Valley.
Among the winners during those years
were Tom Kite in 1993, when he set the
PGA Tour record of 325 for 90 holes; Phil
Mickelson in 2002 and 2004; and most
memorably, David Duval in 1999, who
rolled in a six-foot eagle putt on the par-5
18th to shoot a record 59 and win by one.
In addition to the lore and the location,
course evaluators undoubtedly factored
in the recent improvements to the Palmer
Private Course in elevating the layout to
No. 59 in the state. In 2022, under the
direction of Brandon Johnson of Arnold
Palmer Design Company, greens were
replanted with TifEagle bermuda grass
and their configurations restored to the
golfing icon's original design, allowing for
more hole locations.
Bunker faces that had built up over the
years were also lowered to their original
heights, new bunkers were added on
holes 1, 13 and 14, sand was replaced in
greenside and fairway bunkers, and tee
boxes were leveled. Additionally, green
surrounds were renovated and irrigation
work took place on holes 14 through 17.
"The Palmer Private Course features a
good mix of easy, medium and difficult
holes, along with many scenic holes,"
Temena said. "The well-balanced design,
amazing location and remarkable history
of professional golf tournaments held on
the course are what sets it apart."
