C lassic Club is renowned for its tour-quality golf course, but what many may not know is that the beauty of the club extends far beyond the well-manicured fairways. Nestled amid the rolling greens, a vibrant tapestry of trees, plants, and flowers paint the landscape in a vast array of colors. An abundance of olive and pepper trees, along with numerous pines, also dot the property. "These trees provide a striking backdrop to the many perennial shrubs, such as oleanders, Redlands acacia, bougainvillea, yellow elder, and dwarf bottlebrush, that adorn our grounds," said Director of Agronomy Tony Spannaus. In addition, there are several annual flower beds that accentuate the beauty of the clubhouse and beyond. From vibrant vinca, salvia, and marigolds in the summers to petunias, geraniums, and violas during the winters, the flower beds offer a constantly evolving canvas of color and charm. "We typically do a variation of different colors and schemes when selecting the flowers for the annual beds," Spannaus said. "In the five years I've been here, I don't believe I've done the same mix twice. That's one of the great and fun things about the annual flower beds, you have so many options to choose from and each season can bring a new look and feel to them." Among the landscape at Classic Club, one hidden gem stands out: a bird and butterfly garden that spans 1,000 square feet just west of the clubhouse. The garden, implemented as part of the course's Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf, showcases a carefully selected collection of plants that attract an array of colorful butterflies and a plethora of pollinators. The plants include fairy dusters, sugar bush, deergrass, Ruellia, white sage, trident sage, desert mallow, and creosote bush. When asked about his personal favorites among the assortment of flora at Classic Club, Spannaus couldn't single out just one. "Everything here works so well together and is distinctly different from anything else you'd see in the Valley," he said. "There's a uniqueness here that you won't find anywhere else. It truly is a sight to behold."
