6 • First Tee – Coachella Valley Magazine • Summer 2023 Competitive activities growing at FTCV I nspired by First Tee – Sacramento's Competitive Activities Coordinator position, FTCV brought on Mike McFaul, also known as Coach Mike, just over a year ago. His mission was simple: to develop a more compre- hensive competitive activities pro- gram that complements FTCV's life skills platform. Coach Mike eagerly tackled the challenge, overseeing the U.S. Kids Coachella Valley Tour, PGA Jr. League, organizing monthly events at The Golf Center, and imple- menting Operation 36. These pro- grams introduced golfers of all levels to the competitive side of the sport in an enjoyable and friendly format. Participants seeking guidance on finding the right program can email Coach Mike at mmcfaul@ftcv.org. u u u Outreach Coordinator paying big dividends E very First Tee chapter features a role akin to the unseen hero: the Outreach Coordinator. At FTCV, that hero is Joy Willoughby, who also joined the team a year ago. Her post- COVID challenge was to rekindle rela- tionships with elementary and middle schools in the Coachella Val- ley while retraining or introducing physical education teachers to First Tee's In-School Curriculum. Over the past year, Coach Joy has collaborated with 31 schools in the area, training PE instructors to teach more than 20,000 students in various Valley school districts. In addition to her work with schools, she attended more than 30 outreach events, includ- ing street fairs and festivals. Thank you, Coach Joy! FTCV looks forward to seeing more of your successes as our new Program Coordinator. IN THE NEWS FTCV Celebrates Fathers and Families While top players at the U.S. Open began their final rounds, First Tee – Coachella Valley hosted its own event on Sunday, June 18. The Father's Day event was part of a series of monthly gatherings created by FTCV to entice families to leave their couches and enjoy The Golf Center's 9-hole course in a fun, compet- itive atmosphere. Thank you to all the families that participated!
