A
s the season winds down in
the Coachella Valley and
temperatures begin to creep
up, Director of Agronomy
Tony Spannaus and his team at Classic
Club are looking ahead to next fall and
planning projects they will take on to
keep playing conditions exceptional.
The course is expected to be closed
July 5-August 31, allowing the mainte-
nance team to aerify the tees, fairways,
greens and rough areas. The annual un-
dertaking is one that takes time and ef-
fort, but pays off by keeping the turf
healthy throughout the year.
"Aerification is a much-needed cul-
tural practice that allows for better gas
exchange in the soil profile, better water
infiltration, and the removal of excess
thatch in the root zone that makes for a
much-healthier plant and turf stand
year-round," Spannaus said. "It also
helps relieve soil compaction from cart,
mower and foot traffic."
The process also aids with transition
from winter rye grass to Bermuda in the
summer, while helping promote a better
overseed in the fall and reducing the
chances of winter disease infecting turf.
Spannaus also provided an update on
bunker conditions as the second season
following a complete overhaul of the
course's sand traps concludes.
"The bunkers from the 2019 renova-
tion are still outstanding and playing
great," he said. "With the concrete-capil-
lary design, we have significantly less
washouts, which reduces the amount of
time we have to spend every day push-
ing up sand around the perimeters of the
bunkers. Spending less time on repairs
means that we are able to fully rake
bunkers more often and present a better
product daily for our guests. And be-
cause we reduced the square footage of
the bunkers by about half, we are also
able to put someone anywhere needed
on the course in the morning to complete
our set up ahead of play quicker."
