DESTINATIONS
H
ost to the PGA Tour since 1947,
Pebble Beach Golf Links is also a
six-time U.S. Open venue. Jack
Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Tom Kite and Tom
Watson are the four men who have tri-
umphed at both U.S. Open and Bing
Crosby/AT&T events at Pebble. Merely
being aboard the course, however, means
you're a winner. No layout anywhere offers
what Pebble Beach does, from the curving
coastline to the cliff-top setting above the
Pacific Ocean to the interaction of sun and
wind and fog. There isn't a more thrilling
stretch of holes than 6 through 10, nor a
more memorable finish than the par-5 18th.
This 1966 Robert Trent Jones Sr. creation
combines beauty and brawn like few others,
even as it checks in under 7,000 yards. It de-
buted as a PGA Tour host in 1967, and few
have conquered its dune-flecked, seaside
start nor its final 13 gorgeous, library-quiet
holes through the pines, except Phil Mickel-
son in 2005 and Luke Donald in 2006, when
both posted astonishing 10-under-par 62s.
