T
he TPC Scottsdale's Stadium course
has never been the region's beauty
queen, but the circus-like atmosphere
that dominates the Waste Management
Phoenix Open, golf's best-attended tourna-
ment, has long obscured the stage itself.
Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish crafted the
layout in 1986 and one year later it hosted
its first PGA Tour event. The par-35 front
nine is solid, if unspectacular. It gives way to
a thrill-packed second nine. After sinking or
swimming at the island-green par-5 15th,
you enter the unique arena of the par-3
16th. Golf's rowdiest hole is where Tiger
Woods nailed the ace heard 'round the
world in 1997.
The design is fairly simple, centered on a
moderately contoured green framed by four
bunkers, with a steep fall-off to the left. Miss
the putting surface, however, and you can
imagine the "Boos!" from 20,000 beer-fu-
eled fans. Then comes the drivable par-4
17th, with a lake left and the McDowell
Mountains beyond. It's one of the PGA
Tour's finest risk-reward holes.
