C oachella Valley golfers and snowbirds returning to the area for "the season" will find a pleasant surprise in store the next time they tee it up at Classic Club. That's be- cause Director of Agronomy Tony Spannaus and his team are putting the finishing touches on a major bunker renovation that has significantly im- proved playing conditions. "Personally, I love the new bunkers," Spannaus said. "Aesthetically, they re- ally stand out and help to shape the holes." The project closed the course from July 5 through September 1, as crews removed approximately 50 percent of the bunkers while overhauling the re- maining ones to look and play like new. Work included re-grading and in- stalling new drainage and liners in the bunkers themselves as well as replac- ing turf around them. It was the first large-scale bunker renovation since the course opened in the mid-2000s, and projects like these are necessary at courses everywhere because conditions can deteriorate over time. "Thus far the reaction has been very positive in regards to the changes and the new sand," said Dawson Hess, the Head Golf Professional at Classic Club. "Our regulars are quick to mention that the changes have enhanced their expe- rience and have made the course more playable." The most noticeable change will be in playing conditions throughout the course as drainage in and around bunkers has been improved. "Now the bunkers and all the sur- rounding turf are exceptional," Span- naus said. The course will be closed for routine annual overseeding from October 14- November 15, and until then rates will be $115 per player on Friday-Sunday and $95 Monday-Thursday – each in- cluding a $15 voucher for food and beverage. Regular in-season rates of $160 every day will return when the club re-opens, and will also include the dining voucher. THE COURSE BOOK A TEE TIME LOOKING GOOD!
