In addition to summer aerifica- tion and sod work, Spannaus and his crew are installing several drains in the fairways and rough, which will improve course condi- tions during winter rains. "The condition of the golf course should be really good when we open," Spannaus said. "This is prob- ably the most challenging year I've ever seen as far as transition goes. We had a very mild and cool spring, which is not favorable for the growth of Bermuda grass – fortu- nately, this closure has allowed us to add extra water and fertilizer, along with some other cultural practices that would have been dif- ficult to do had we been open. This has helped us speed up the transi- tion of our warm-season turf, and we should be on target for the Sep- tember 1 opening." and play like new. This is the first bunker renovation un- dertaken since the club opened in the mid-2000s. "We have pretty much gone through every hole at this point and are just about done with the rough grading," Spannaus explained. "Now we are primarily fo- cused on installing drainage, placing the liners in the bottoms of the bunkers and pouring the capillary concrete. We will also be starting some sod work around the perimeters of the sand traps." Bunker conditions inevitably deterio- rate over time at any course. Spannaus is confident that once the renovation is complete that course conditions at Clas- sic Club will be top notch. "The new bunkers will play perfectly because they are getting a state-of-the-art renovation with the newest and best technology we have ever seen," Span- naus said. "The ability of the capillary concrete and drainage system is amazing – even with a heavy rainfall of an inch or more, washouts are rarely seen in this new bunker design, making them playable under almost any circumstance. The aesthetics of the bunkers will also be vastly improved."
