WELCOME NOTE
2 • Long Beach Golf Festival Tournament Guide • 2019 Edition
A
s the Long Beach Golf Festival
enters its 31st year, a look back
three decades ago illustrates just
how significant an impact it has
made in the community. When the Festi-
val debuted in 1989, the Dodgers
were coming off their most recent
World Series victory, the Lakers
were in the midst of their last
great run of the Showtime era,
and Los Angeles still had two
NFL teams … the first time.
The first champion of the Festi-
val's Long Beach Open, Paul Mason,
had yet to begin his long and successful ca-
reer as a PGA golf professional, and its sec-
ond winner, Long Beach's own Paul
Goydos, could only dream of a PGA Tour
career that would span more than 500 tour-
naments and include two victories.
Much has changed since the Festival
started, yet its core mission remains the
same — to embrace this golf-centric com-
munity and give golfers opportunities to
play in some great championship events
throughout the spring and summer.
Whether you're a professional seeking
to bolster your resume at the Long Beach
Open, a young player establishing your
roots in the Crosby Memorial Junior
Championships or one of the hundreds
of passionate amateurs who play in our
tournaments for men and women each year,
there's an event that will test your game
and get your competitive juices flowing.
From our volunteer kick-off tournament
April 12 through the final round of the
Long Beach Open on August 11, we've got
four months of amazing golf planned for
the residents of Long Beach and beyond. Of
course, none of this would be possible with-
out our dedicated volunteers and the sup-
port we receive from both the city's Parks
and Recreation Department and American
Golf Corporation, which manages the three
courses in the Festival rotation — Recre-
ation Park, Skylinks and El Dorado Park.
Welcome to the 31st Long Beach Golf Fes-
tival, and best of luck to all our competitors!
