MAKING HEADLINES
OB Sports National Team Championship winners.
BY joel Beers
A
great deal has changed in the
state of Arizona over the past
60 years, but Pinewood Coun-
try Club continues to offer an excep-
tional golf experience while staying
true to its roots.
A private, member-only club that
allows public play at off-peak times,
the parkland-style track is located in
Munds Park about 120 miles north of
Phoenix. It features tree-lined fairways
and an emphasis on subtlety and strat-
egy – the bedrocks of traditional old-
school golf.
"It's the type of course you want to
play every day – a really fun layout,"
said OB Sports Senior Vice President of
Operations Matt Molloy of the course
celebrating its diamond anniversary
this year.
At just over 6,600 yards from the
tips, the course is manageable in terms
of length, but its small, slippery greens
that slope from back to front provide
ample challenge.
"The good news is that you won't
have very many lengthy putts because
the greens are small in size, but very
tricky," Molloy said.
Pinewood is a seasonal club that
shuts down on November 1 and this
year will re-open on April 19. A 60th
anniversary celebration is planned to-
ward the end of June, but the facility
kicked off the commemoration in De-
cember with "60 Days of Pinewood."
All new members who join within 60
days beginning December 18 will earn
up to a $500 club credit and all new
members and renewals in that time are
entered into a drawing on February 18.
And while it may be an old-school
property, Pinewood isn't stuck in the
past. Planning has begun for a club-
house remodel to give it "an updated
look inside and out," Molloy said.
