TOURNAMENTS T here is nothing quite like it anywhere else, and golfers in and around Southern California look forward each summer to the Long Beach Golf Festival. The seven-event tournament series features competition for all levels of golfers, from juniors to super seniors, punctuated by the $175,000 Long Beach Open. "To say it's an institution is putting it mildly," said Tim Forbes, the Executive Director of the Festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. Forbes said 1,243 golfers played in one or more of the events, totaling more than 3,000 tournament rounds on Skylinks, Recreation Park and El Dorado Park. Jered Stone rolled to a three-stroke victory over Torey Edwards in the Long Beach Open on July 26-29, building a substantial lead after a second-round 62 at Skylinks – one stroke shy of the course record. The amateur division title went to Joe Fryer, a senior at Long Beach State, who won by five strokes. "Jered was red hot, throwing out really low numbers (66 and 62) in the first two rounds, and riding that to victory," Forbes said. "I think this is his fourth or fifth Long Beach Open, and he had fallen just short of making the cut a number of times, so this was big for him." The Festival teed off April 4 with the Crosby Memorial Junior Golf Championship. Boys age-group winners included Sutton Tucker, Matthew Schafer, Nathan Tseng and Dominic Lingad, while girls titles went to Brianna Kim, Alyson Sor and Kristina Xu. Doug Williams shot 4- under-par 212 to win the May 15-18 Senior Amateur Championship, a tournament that also included multiple flights for gross and net competition and a super seniors division. Marcus Mercado-Kiel beat Cody Hall in 19 holes to win the Match Play Championship in early June. The Women's City Championship winner was Vanessa Wang, and Lewis Simon captured the Men's City Championship by a single stroke. There was also a Pro-Am to kick off the Long Beach Open on July 25.
