THE GOLF COURSE
BOOK
A TEE
TIME
A
ll golfers know the impor-
tance of turf. When it comes
to the grass and soil on our
fairways and greens, consistency,
maintenance and quality is of para-
mount importance.
And arguably the most important
time for turf upkeep at Classic Club
comes during the summer when
fewer golfers are teeing it up.
Like every summer since the course
opened in 2006, aerification of the
greens will take place. This process is
vital in that it loosens compacted soil
and allows more oxygen to reach
grass roots, which is necessary for
healthy conditions year-round. But
this year, there's a twist. Instead of
one aerification, Director of Agron-
omy Andrew Rebman and his crew
will perform the procedure twice.
The initial aerification took place
June 18-22; the next is scheduled for
July 24-27. (View special rates HERE.)
"A typical aerification only dis-
places 7-8 percent of the total surface
area. That means it will take us over
10 years to displace the entire sur-
face," said Rebman. "By doing two
aerifications per year we are able to
cut that time in half."
Along with the greens aerification,
vericutting of the fairways – which
utilizes vertical shears to get between
grass blades and soil surface to help
remove dead, organic debris, or
thatch, that builds up – will also take
place during the summer as the
course transitions from cool-weather
rye grass to heat-tolerant bermuda.
"All of these cultural practices
strengthen our bermuda grass, which
helps during the overseeding process
and leads to a better transition the
following summer," Rebman said.
And just how will golfers be im-
pacted during all this work?
"We will have good summer condi-
tions," Rebman said. "With 18 signa-
ture holes that offer immense variety
along with fantastic natural surround-
ing beauty, Classic Club offers a truly
unique experience any time of year."
Meanwhile, Rebman and crew are
also nailing down the parameters of a
bunker renovation that will begin
next year. He is working with course
manager Troon Golf and ownership
to determine the full scope and scale
of the project. Rebman believes this
step in the process will be completed
shortly, and once the timing and du-
ration of the project is dialed in, a
construction contractor will be hired.
"The bunkers have reached the age
where they are due for a renovation,"
Rebman said. "Upon completion, our
guests will encounter quality bunker
conditions that improve the golf
course's overall playability."
