F
ormer pizza restaurant manager and
golf hobbyist turned golf professional,
Bob Becker knows what it's like to have
to practice, practice and practice some more to
get your game where it needs to be.
His golf career began at Napa Golf Course,
where he worked first as a guest services
staffer before working on his game and gain-
ing enough golf experience that he could
move into the golf side of things permanently.
He was the Head Golf Professional and
Tournament Director at Napa Golf Course
before beginning his tenure at Chardonnay
Golf Club.
How long have you been working at
Chardonnay?
This year is the start of my fifth year.
What might someone be surprised to know
about you?
Before becoming a golf professional, I man-
aged a couple of Round Table Pizza restau-
rants in Marin County.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The people I get to meet and play golf with
is the best part. I really enjoy working with
our customers and making Chardonnay like
family. I want people to play here because we
are friends. I want them to feel at home. Hos-
pitality is the best.
What are some of your favorite golf tips?
The most important tip is to have fun!
When you relax and are having fun, you will
play much better. Also, when it comes to get-
ting more distance off the tee, keep the club as
far away from you as possible during the
backswing. This creates leverage which will
create club head speed.
What is one thing you want your students
to come away from your lessons knowing?
Golf isn't like riding a bike. If you want re-
sults then you need to practice.
What are some of the things you love about
Chardonnay's golf course?
Chardonnay has some of the best views
around. It's surrounded by vineyards, which
is unique – most courses are surrounded by
homes. The layout of Chardonnay is also
unique because of the six par 3s, six par 4s
and six par 5s. I haven't played any course
like that.
