And that's a good thing. "As Golf Course Super- intendent, it's my job to maintain the course to the best of my ability, utilizing all of my available man- power," says Singh, who first got started in the business in 1985 after ar- riving in Northern Cali- fornia from his native India. "I fell in love with this line of work 28 years ago and have never looked back." When did you begin working at Chardonnay? February 16, 2012. What do you enjoy most about Chardonnay? The great people I get to work with. And, there is a lot of natural beauty around this property. Your greatest strength on the job? Getting the most out of everybody who works for me. What is the job's most challenging aspect? Deal- ing with the weather — and the water. This year especially. Everyone is af- fected by the drought. What's one thing about your job that most people don't know? How tough it is. There are a lot of com- ponents to keeping the course in shape. People think growing grass is easy, but it's not always that easy. When it comes to your job, what one word best describes you? Passionate. What are you most proud of? Doing my job to the best of my ability. What do you like to do outside of work? I could play basketball all day long, eight days a week. What phrase do you most overuse? Good as always. If someone asks me how I'm doing, I say, "Good as always." What do you consider your greatest achieve- ment? I'm married to the woman I love and I have two boys who turned out to be really great kids and who are both in college. What is your most treasured possession? My health. As long as I'm healthy, I'm fine. What is your motto? Get up early in the morning and go, go, go. MEET SURINDER SINGH "My motto on the job?
