YOUR GAME
At courses like Gamble Sands, the
game is best played on the ground
I
t has been 11 years since The Open Championship was last
held at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, which dates to
the 16th century and is not only one of the world's most
historic courses, but also one of the most difficult.
When the tournament returns to Carnoustie for the eighth
time July 19-22, the classic links course will likely produce a win-
ning score of single digits under par, as the lowest score it has
yielded for the game's oldest major championship has been 9-
under. Perhaps the winner won't break par, which has happened
four of the seven times the tournament has been played there.
The difficulty that the world's best players encounter at
Carnoustie lends plenty of credence to the challenge of links-
style golf, characterized by wide-open expanses of land with few
trees built on sand dunes that create fast and firm conditions –
and, of course, plenty of wind.
