OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SUMMER 2018 x obsports.com l DESTINATIONS A decade ago, Tetherow in Bend, Oregon, opened to wide ac- claim in the golf world. Situ- ated on a gorgeous piece of land surrounded by spectacular natural beauty and the product of David McLay Kidd, who also designed Bandon Dunes and a slew of other incredible courses, Tetherow continues to raise the bar as it celebrates its 10-year anniversary. "The property has evolved and grown better year over year," says Director of Marketing Rory Hume. "Tetherow is unique in that it combines the best of both worlds – Central Oregon and a world-class resort – and it's centrally located less than 10 minutes from downtown Bend." Located in one of the outdoor vacation meccas of the world and flanked by na- tional forests and the wild and scenic De- schutes River, an interesting aspect about Tetherow is how different it looks from the surrounding terrain. While mountains can be seen on every hole, Kidd created an in- land links, Scottish heathland-style course. "There is pure beauty and eye candy everywhere with mountain views from nearly every hole depending on your angle," Hume says. "What's also unique about the course is the land that it was built on was already carved out due to the 1990 Aubrey Hall fire. Sustainability and preservation practices were used as much as possible in the building of the course." Because of the links-style layout, golfers playing Tetherow must know how to play an array of bump-and-run shots. "A lot of golfers want to play typical American flop shots and that just won't work at Tetherow," Hume said. "This course will teach you humility." And while the entire layout is intriguing due to the variety of shots that golfers need to hit to get around it, there are some signature holes. Kidd has refered to No. 17 his as his "darling." Known as the Quarry Hole, the par-3 is 182 yards from the tips. It was built into an old pumice quarry and even though Kidd didn't have to marshal a great deal of earthmoving to shape the hole, golfers will be asked to show their true strength with a challenging tee shot. Other memorable holes are No. 3, which provides water and mountain views, and No. 6 and No. 13, which have spectacular mountain views. While the golf course is the centerpiece of Tetherow, the facility offers much more.
