THE LESSON TEE > C L I C K H E R E F O R W AY S T O E N J O Y Y O U R T I M E O N T H E P R A C T I C E T E E M ost golfers recognize that heading to the range and hitting driver after driver until your large bucket is empty is not an effective strategy for game improvement. Successful practice takes planning, and there are a few things you can do to get the most out of your time, according to Dana Dahlquist, a veteran instructor at El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach… ••• wORk ON YOUR wEAkNESSES Focus on hitting the clubs that you're not as good with out on the golf course. If you're struggling with your driver or your wedges, work on those clubs and concentrate on getting better with them. ••• BREAk It DOwN Don't just go out and rapid-fire a bunch of balls – break up your practice session like you'd divide your time at the gym. Also, while you're hitting various shots, look at your fundamentals to make sure they stay solid. Make sure your grip and ball position are correct throughout your time on the range. For the average player, keep things simple. ••• GEt tO kNOw YOUR DIStANCES If you're on a driving range that's marked properly, or you can laser measure a handful of targets with a rangefinder, you can work on really understanding how far you actually hit each club. The average player struggles with their shots into the green more than anything, so knowing your yardages becomes really important. ••• SOLIDIFY YOUR SHORt GAME When you're practicing your short game, don't hit the same shot over and over – you need to create some conflict, so maybe you hit one off a bare lie, then another into the grain, one out of the rough and another out of a tight lie. Each shot is slightly different, so by working on these you develop a little more coordination and touch. ...................................................... ....................................... > Dana Dahlquist is a veteran instructor at El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif., who has worked with juniors and top touring pros, emphasizing a focus on the basics of the golf swing.
