THE GRIP: HOT DOGS, HAMMERS, & THE TRIGGER FINGER Interlock Grip Overlap Grip 10 Finger Grip Lead Hand Trail Hand Putting your hands on the club properly is essential to playing high level golf. Your hands are the only connection between you and the golf club. A proper grip can assist with club face control throughout the swing, forward shaft lean, and proper hinging for distance and trajectory. The following recommendations will apply to all three kinds of grips: ten finger, overlap, and interlock. THE LEAD HAND - THE HAMMER GRIP (left hand for right handed players and right hand for left handed players) The best way to put the lead hand on the club is to think about how to hold a hammer. The grip needs to run along the base of the fingers, with the heel pad on the top of the grip. From the front view, you should see a bent left wrist and the snuff box (hinge point) on top. THE TRAIL HAND - THE TRIGGER FINGER & HOT DOG IN THE BUN The trail hand should fit nicely into the lead hand. The palm of the trail hand (the bun) should cover up the lead hand's thumb (the hot dog)! The handle of the club should run along the base of the fingers with the thumb resting on the top left (for right handed players) quadrant of the grip. Lastly, the index finger should be positioned under the handle of the club in a "trigger finger" position. Each detail described is important to the success of your golf game. Remember, your hands are the only connection to the golf club and the single most important factor in controlling the club face. COURTNEY MAHON
