SHOW BUSINESS
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW
I
f you've never been to the PGA Merchandise Show held each Jan-
uary in Orlando, I can tell you it's quite an experience. I've been
to around 25 of these annual shows and the spectacle of it all
never ceases to amaze me as tens of thousands of golf industry pro-
fessionals gather for an up-close look at the latest and great-
est golf gear from more than 1,000 vendors.
This year, I was especially amazed by…
…how much "younger" the industry has become.
I've been with Worldwide Golf Shops for 34 years and
there are so many people now involved in the busi-
ness who haven't even been alive for that long.
…how all of the manufacturers can continue to
come up with better products year after year. The
amount of money being spent on R&D continues to grow
and with the testing the vendors can do today, the equipment has
gotten so much better. I didn't think it was possible, but this year's
equipment is even better than last year's.
…how many times we discussed Tiger Woods. Him playing that
week at Torrey Pines was part of it, but he came up in every one of
our meetings. My take is the entire industry should be pulling for
him to play well. He's good for our game.
…how positive everyone is regarding our industry. In addition
to Tiger, the PGA Tour has so much young talent on it that people are
excited. Each of our vendors have great new product ready to go and
are running healthy businesses. I left Orlando feeling very confident
about the overall health of our business, industry and game.
