I t's rye time in the Coachella Valley, with golf courses across the desert coming out of the an- nual overseed season that sees courses close for three- to-five weeks each autumn. With the transition from warm-weather Bermuda grass to turf that can with- stand the cooler temps of a winter's eve, the process keeps Classic Club looking lush for the valley's idyllic peak-season months. After starting its overseed process on October 9, the course re-opens for play Fri- day, November 10. "Overseeding went well and we have had a good catch despite the abnormally high temperatures this Octo- ber," said Andrew Rebman, Director of Agronomy. For a thorough look at the season's overseed of the Arnold Palmer-designed lay- out, Rebman took time to ad- dress a few more questions: when do you envision the course will be in peak condi- tion? The course will be in great condition upon opening, but the rye grass usually reaches its maturity during the begin- ning of January. upon reopening, are play- ers restricted to "cart path- only" for any duration of time? Our goal is to be off the paths on opening day. did you and your crew work on any other course projects during overseed? During the closure, we worked on fall trimming of landscape plants and plant- ing flowers. There's been increased talk of experiments with all-sea- son grasses, which could eliminate the need for over- seeding. do you think such a grass will ever be created? There have been some new Bermuda varieties that have come out in recent years that are more cold tolerant and hold their color better in colder temperatures. But I think a true all-season grass that can hold up to traffic and play during the winter months is still a long way off.
