8 x WINE TRAVELER x NOVEMBER 2017 FROM THE SOMMELIER difference between a value wine and an ex- pensive one? Certainly if blind tasting a $5 bottle of wine next to a $100 bottle side by side the differences would be apparent. e aromas would be more vivid and complex in the expensive bottle while the flavors of the other bottle would be more blurry and less precise. Also, there are wider and deeper ranges of flavors from a more expensive bot- tle as the flavors evolve with each and every sip. On average, the lesser bottle of wine would not offer this kind of experience. In a past wine class I poured a high end bottle of wine to end the tasting and I will never forget one student's reaction to it. Upon smelling the wine the clarity of aro- mas reminded her of a distant childhood memory that she had long forgotten. She was so overcome by the moment as her en- ergy and happiness lit up the entire room. She connected so deeply with the wine because the aromas and flavors were so vivid. at's not to say that every expensive bottle of wine will have this effect. is could happen with less expensive bottles, but the chances of having an experience like this diminish greatly. And if you were to ask her if the wine was worth the cost I am sure she would say that is was well worth it. THREE RECOMMENDATIONS < NV Krug Grande Cuvee Brut Champagne, France (750ml) $139.99-$199.99 < Cade Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Napa Valley, California (750ml) $189.99- $225.00 < Bodegas Vega Sicilia "Valbuena" Valladola, Spain (750 ml) $129.99-$189.99
