stars on the rise
It's been quite a year for top players and clubmakers
T
here are still a few months left on the calendar, but 2017 has
really shaped up to be quite a year for breakthroughs in the
world of golf – both inside and outside the ropes.
We saw Sergio Garcia emerge to capture his long-awaited
first major championship at the Masters, Jordan Spieth
assert himself as the odds-on favorite to become the
player of his generation, and Justin Thomas rise to
the top of his profession with a breakout year that
included winning the FedEx Cup.
Off the course, equipment makers also have
raised their games by continuing to introduce in-
novative new products that endeavor to make the
game more enjoyable for everyday players. And if the
recent crop of clubs released by manufacturers this fall season is
any indication, golfers are sure to appreciate the results.
Highlights include Titleist's new family of 718 irons and 818 hy-
brids, Mizuno's MP-18 irons that come in a wide variety of styles,
TaylorMade's P790 and M CGB irons that appeal to a vast spec-
trum of golfers, and Ping's line of G400 clubs. Notably, Cleveland
Golf has re-entered the metalwood and iron game with the release
of its Launcher line. All in all, I can't recall a time in recent mem-
ory that has seen so much top-quality gear released in such a flurry.
Like the rising stars on the PGA Tour, clubmakers are taking
their games – and ours – to the next level.
