COVER STORY SoCal GOLF INSIDER The Powell brothers grew up in Dallas and learned to play the game after they started caddying as youngsters at Stevens Park Golf Course. They became very good players very quickly, met fellow Texans Ben Hogan and Byron Nel- son along the way, and established themselves as top Texas players in the 1940s. Jimmy is now 82 and liv- ing in La Quinta. "When he was young, Jimmy al- ways beat me, but I beat him most of the time now," John said, laugh- ing. John Powell said his lowest ca- reer round is 63 on Los Serranos North, where he plays a weekly skins game on Tuesdays. How does Powell continue to keep playing at such a high level and going so low at the age of 87? "I stay in shape," he said. "I work out at least two times a week: on the treadmill, in the gym and lift free weights." "John is a very wiry guy and still very flexible," said Scodeller, who has played several rounds with the Powell brothers over the years. "He's one of those few guys whose game isn't deteriorating as he gets older." Powell's only concession to age is playing Los Serranos' North Course at about 6,200 yards instead of the longer South Course (7,628 yards and par 74 from the leg- endary "Jack's Blacks" back tees). He has been a teaching pro at Los Serranos since 1978, but he no longer keeps regular instruction hours. "If somebody wants a les- son, I'm available," he said. But he'd much rather be on the course – shooting lower than his age. "I like to beat all the young guys," Powell said, laughing. Now that the secret is out about John Powell's record round, it might be harder for him to find a money game. But that's a small price to pay for making history. continued from previous screen >> San Clemente Municipal Golf Course A scenic, family friendly, ocean view golf course where Fridays are still weekdays, walkers are still welcome, and juniors are always 1/2 price. 150 E Avenida Magdalena, San Clemente CA Starter: 949-361-8384 | Restaurant: 949-542-4856 sanclementegc.com BOOK NOW!
