RILEY TO COACH GOLF AT USD: Chris Riley, a longtime PGA Tour player and former Ryder Cup member, has been hired as men's golf coach at Uni- versity of San Diego. Riley, 43, is a San Diego native who played 14 years on the PGA Tour. His career highlights: win- ning the 2002 Reno-Tahoe Open and representing the U.S. in the 1995 Walker Cup and the 2004 Ryder Cup. ••••• PALMER INDUCTED IN THE HALL: Sandra Palmer, director of women's golf at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mis- sion Viejo, was inducted into the Leg- ends Hall of Fame on July 8, in festivities connected to the Senior LPGA Champi- onship at French Lick Resort in Indiana. Palmer won 19 professional events dur- ing her career, including two majors: the 1972 Titleholders Championship and the 1975 U.S. Women's Open. She was also the LPGA Player of the Year and leading money-winner in 1975. ••••• GM BOUND FOR BIG CEDAR LODGE: Steve Friedlander, the former PGA vice president of golf at The Resort at Pelican Hill and Oak Creek Golf Club in Orange County, has been named vice president of golf at Big Cedar Lodge, a multi-course resort near Branson, Mo., where Tiger Woods is designing a pub- lic-access course named "Payne's Valley." ••••• GAZZOLO GOES BACK-TO-BACK: Former UC Riverside star David Gaz- zolo shot a final-round 65 at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta on July 14 to win the California State Open and become the first player to win back-to-back ti- tles since Terry Small in 1969-70. Tyler Torano of Chula Visa finished one shot behind Gazzolo (11-under total over 72 holes) for the second straight year. Ar- royo Trabuco head pro Michael Block, the 2001 champion, tied for eighth and was the low club pro for the second straight year. ••••• WELCOME TO L.A. WALKER CUP: Three weeks after the U.S. Amateur at Riviera and six miles away, the biennial Walker Cup matches will be contested Sept. 9-10 on the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club. The entire 10- man U.S. team of top amateurs, which will compete against a team of top am- ateurs from Great Britain & Ireland, will be announced by the USGA immedi- ately after the U.S. Amateur is com- pleted on Aug. 20. A leading contender for one spot is former Trojan Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach. ••••• THE GIRL'S GOT GAME: Alyaa Ab- dulghany of Newport Beach will com- pete for the United States team in the ninth annual PING Junior Solheim Cup (Aug. 14-16) at Des Moines Golf & Country Club against a team of top jun- ior girls from Europe. Abdulghany, 18, will be a freshman at USC in the fall and has signed a letter-of-intent to play for the golf team. She is ranked No. 5 nationally by the AJGA and No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Girls Rankings.
