programs will focus on social skills, education and an
introduction to the various career opportunities avail-
able in golf.
Additionally, the new clubhouse features the 1,000
square foot Ginger Shattuck community room, which
will serve as a center for after-school tutoring and youth
sports programs. Named for the retired head of the Nor-
walk-La Mirada School District who spent her entire ca-
reer working for the district as a teacher, principal and
superintendent, the room will also also be available for
private events.
"The community room will serve the juniors who are
at the facility working with the SCGA - we're working
with them to build in an educational curriculum," said
Joyce Shelton, the Assistant Golf Director for the L.A.
County Department of Parks and Recreation. "This
summer, one of the events we're hosting there is a col-
lege prep night to help kids understand the path to col-
lege, and we plan to have some events to introduce kids
to the golf industry. We're looking at working with local
community youth groups and anticipate using it for a
variety of purposes related to youth programming."
During a grand-opening ceremony on July 17, John
Wicker, Director of Department of Parks and Recreation,
said it was always Don Knabe's vision to turn the prop-
erty into a golf course and training center for the com-
munity, especially juniors and seniors.
"It's safe to say his vision has been fulfilled," Wicker
said.
